PostgreSQL getting started

Postby Petoria » Fri Feb 18, 2011 1:25 am

So I just bought PT3, download it without problem. I double click to start, put in the registration code and then a box comes up that says "Configure PostgreSQL Server".

All the information is the same as in the getting started FAQ (server, port, database user, and password).

So I click connect and i'm getting a message that says "Unable to connect to this database. Please check the configuration"

There was never an option to install PostgreSQL. So I went to the website suggested in the startup guide and downloaded PostgreSQL version 9.0 I believe and in the setup it wanted me to provide a password which i was never given.

So I uninstalled everything and started over. Now I just have PT3 downloaded and it's giving me the same "Configure PostgreSQL Server" screen without the option to install.

So how can i get PostgreSQL to work I guess is my question or how can I get PT3 to give me the install screen for it?

Really anything would be helpful

Is it possible that you have used PostgreSQL before on this computer? If so you will need to use the password that you used before – if you've used another tracker try 'postgrespass'.

Otherwise see the guide on reinstalling PostgreSQL in our Documentation.

Ok, the documentation website got me to the "Initialize Database Cluster" screen shown on page 19 of the guide listed above.

When I click next after setting the "encoding server", the "client" and the password, I get an error that says:

"The 'Secondary Logon' service is not running. This service is required for the installer to initialize the database. Please start this service and try again."

What should i do?

Click Start, type in Services.msc and hit enter. In the window that appears, locate the Secondary Logon service from the list and right click it and click Properties. Set it to startup type Automatic and Start the service. The installer should then complete normally.

Ok, that worked until it started installing and it said that "postgre already exists" and it stopped the installation

Did you follow the uninstall part of the directions?
You will not be able to re-install PostgreSQL unless it is fully uninstalled first.

I'll try the uninstall directions again, but I'm pretty sure I followed them to the letter.

Are there any other possibilities?

Actually I just went back to the command prompt and deleted net user postgres and went back to the installer. This time I got farther before hitting the message:

"Internal account lookup failure: No mapping between account names and security IDs was done"

Ok, found the problem

I changed the name from CHRIS-HP to something else. I did this because it wasnt letting me create the name, so I tried to change it and it worked so I continued to change it each time I tried to install assuming that was necessary.

The reason it wasnt working before was either due to an administrative privilege error or not having the "net user postgres /delete" step done. Either way, I googled the problem and it suggested leaving the domain name as the default. Tried it then ran everything by the book and it installed properly.

Thank you for all your help
